Cellulite is a common skin condition that makes the surface appear lumpy or dimpled. The effect is caused by connective tissues between the skin and the underlying muscle: as they thicken, they pull down on the skin and create a dimple-like appearance. The condition is not harmful, but it can be aesthetically unwelcome.
Cellulite can affect both men and women, though it is most commonly found in women, in areas such as the thighs, stomach, and buttocks. Depending on severity, it is categorised into four grades:
- Grade 0: no visible cellulite.
- Grade 1: dimples appear when sitting.
- Grade 2: moderate dimpling when sitting or standing.
- Grade 3: severe dimpling when sitting or standing.
Treatment options for cellulite
Topical treatments
Topical treatments help reduce the visibility of cellulite but do not eradicate it, and their effects are not immediate. The dermatologist will ask you to be consistent with application in order to notice a change. Some topical creams work to tighten the skin so it appears smoother and firmer, and they add moisture to the skin, further reducing the appearance of cellulite. Common ingredients include:
- Retinol, a vitamin A derivative
- Methylxanthines, such as caffeine
- Ascorbic acid (vitamin C)
- Alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E)
- Aminophylline
- Botanical extracts, including pineapple, yuzu, and centella
Dermatological or cosmetic treatments
Dermatologists use advanced techniques to help reduce cellulite and visible dimpling on various parts of the body. After assessing your condition and its severity, the dermatologist may choose from the procedures below. In some cases they may use a combination therapy, pairing two treatments for more effective results.
Acoustic wave therapy
This procedure uses ultrasonic waves to break down fibrous bands of tissue, allowing fatty cells to relax. Over multiple sessions, the skin returns to a smoother-looking appearance.
Radiofrequency
Radiofrequency treatment for cellulite reduction is a non-ablative procedure that uses radiofrequency energy to target fatty cells and release the connective tissues that cause dimpling. It tightens the skin, increases blood circulation, improves skin appearance, and helps fatty deposits drain via the lymphatic system.
Laser treatment
Laser technology is one of the most effective treatments for cellulite, with a high success rate. The dermatologist inserts a tiny laser fibre under the skin; when fired, the energy breaks the bands that cause the condition. This treatment may also thicken the skin, which helps reduce the appearance of cellulite.
Subcision
Also known as Cellfina, this treatment targets cellulite dimples on the thighs and buttocks. It uses a needle-sized microblade to break up the connective bands that cause the dimples. The results are long-lasting, often with no sign of cellulite for up to three years.
Vacuum-assisted precise tissue release
In this procedure, a suction device lifts the tissue of the cellulite dimple, after which small blades sever the rigid bands of connective tissue, eliminating the dimpled appearance of the skin.
Is treatment right for me?
The best approach depends on the grade and location of your cellulite, which the dermatologist will assess before recommending a plan. At Derma Essence, treatment is led by Dr. Reena Sharma (MD Dermatology). For related concerns, see fat reduction or stretch marks removal.
